Is Jiu Jitsu good for kids?

Martial art training is a fantastic way to improve your health and fitness. For many parents, any activity that gets the kids off the couch and moving is good, and we’d agree.  Martial arts typically offer something extra though, that you often don’t get out of other activities. Whilst just about any sport will improve fitness and other physical abilities, other gains are often sadly missed.  What do I mean?  Improvements to confidence, self-esteem, focus… these are important things that kids can benefit from everyday such as at school, but are also things that only martial arts set out to teach (have you heard a soccer club talking about how they are working to improve focus at training?.. not typically).

Turning to the question, is Jiu Jitsu good for goods?… yes.  Is it the best martial art for kids?  It depends to some extent on the individual child.  Particularly for young children, they tend to like to be able to feel like they are getting improvements quickly.  Hey Mum!  Check-out what I learnt at class today…!  The problem with Jiu Jitsu, and all joint based martial arts such as BJJ, Hapkido, Aikido, and Judo, is that they are very technical.  Like anything that’s very technical, it takes more time to learn.  Often a lot more time.  BJJ gives a good example where it typically takes 12-14 years to get a black belt, compared to around 5 years in most martial arts.  Honestly, how many kids are going to stick to an activity for 12 years…

What are the alternatives to Jiu Jitsu for kids?

Taekwondo and Karate are probably the best known martial arts, and for good reason.  Taekwondo has around 200 million practitioners worldwide and is thought to be the largest of the martial arts by participant numbers.  The reasons are pretty simple, it’s fun and easy to learn, and at the right club, you’ll learn practical self-defence and martial art skills mixed in with focus and fitness.  For younger children especially, being able to learn skills quickly and feel like they are progressing is a real benefit, and something that helps kids stick with it.  Typically kids work on skills for a term and will grade to the next level at the end of the term.
