Can a beginner learn Krav Maga?

Is Krav Maga for beginners?

Krav Maga was designed from the outset to be quick and easy to learn.  In martial arts terms, Krav Maga is pretty new (compared to say Taekwondo which is about 3000yrs old).  One advantage of this newness, is that it has allowed Krav Maga to capitalise on all the developments and improvements that have taken place in other martial arts.  Krav Maga has combined the best techniques from many martial arts like karate, judo, Jiu Jitsu and Kung Fu, putting them together in such a way as to make them as quick to learn and effective as possible.  Coming back to the question, can a beginner learn Krav Maga, the key purpose in designing the new self-defence and martial art system that is Krav Maga, was to come up with a system that could be taught to soldiers as quickly as possible.  They wanted something that would keep the soldiers safe under the most difficult conditions, but knew that they needed something that didn’t take a lifetime to learn, something that could take a new soldier, a beginner, up to proficient and ready to survive combat, as quickly as possible.  You could in fact say, that Krav Maga was specifically designed for beginners!

So can a beginner learn Krav Maga?

Yes, but don’t be fooled… Because Krav Maga is great for beginners, there are of course some people out there suggesting you can do a weekend course and ‘learn self-defence’.  While a weekend course is great to learn some protective behaviours, you have to ask yourself the question, could I learn guitar in a weekend?  How about German, could I learn that in a weekend?  If you answered, no chance!… common sense tells you that you can’t learn self-defence in a weekend either.  This becomes even more obvious when you start to think about what ‘learn self-defence’ means.  For most people, they don’t except to be a Pro MMA Fighter, but they would like to feel like if something happened, they could successfully defend themselves and get home safe, whether that something be someone taking a swing at them, grabbing their hair, grabbing their shirt, strangling, dragging, pushing, choking, punching, tackling… what if they’re standing and you get pushed to the ground?… what if they’re on the ground on top of you?… what if they have a knife… what if there is more than one attacker… there are so many things that an attacker can do!  Now consider, that you have to be able to remember how to defend against each situation…. then be able to punch, kick, knee, and fight your way to freedom and safety well enough to make an attacker who is most likely bigger, stronger, heavier and more aggressive… stop and let you go, all under the high stress situation that is the reality of self-defence.  So yes, a beginner can learn Krav Maga, and it is definitely one of the best ways to get self-defence skills more quickly, but it still takes time.  Realistically, you just can’t learn all of that in a weekend or a few weeks, but the good news is, classes are a great workout, fun, social, and will, after a few months start to help you feel more confident in your ability to defend yourself in basic situations.
